Belga getting better with age

BEAU Belga is enjoying a career rebirth and it couldn't have come at a better time for Rain or Shine.

The 37-year-old Belga reset his career-high by finishing with 28 points in the Elasto Painters' wire-to-wire 115-105 victory over Northport Batang Pier that stretched their win streak to five in the PBA Philippine Cup.

Belga also grabbed 13 boards, just short of a rebound to equal his career-best.

The reboot is not by design but by necessity, according to the veteran center.

Belga needs to be aggressive offensively since rookie Keith Datu came down with an MCL Grade 2 sprain and out for an extended period of time.

"Simula nung na-injury si Keith, talagang pinanindigan ko na. Magbabakaw na ako," said Belga after Rain or Shine improved to 5-4 in the standings.

"Nagkakaroon na ako ng time na 16, 17 shots in a game. Bibihira yun sa 15 years ko dito sa PBA. Usually, 11, 10 and pinakamarami na."

Coach Yeng Guiao doesn't see any problem with it especially with Belga delivering the numbers behind his conference averages of 16.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 5.3 assists.

"Consistent si Beau. Kailangan talagang mag-double time siya kasi kulang kami sa malaki," said Guiao.

"Si Keith Datu, si Luis (Villega) di pa rin makakalaro. Pero pinupunuan naman ni Beau," added the Rain or Shine coach. "Nakita ninyo naman si Beau kundisyon din kaya nakakasabay din siya (sa takbuhan). Extended minutes nga siya, e." (RG)
