Dream matchup for Juan and Javi

THE Gomez de Liano brothers will no doubt pencil the first meeting between Magnolia and Converge on their calendar once the PBA schedule comes out.

Javi and Juan can't wait to play against one another for the first time on the PBA hardcourt after the two took different paths since their days as college teammates at the University of the Philippines.

"It's pretty exciting. Can't wait for that matchup," Juan said after being selected second overall by Converge in Sunday's Rookie Draft at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall.

"Javi and I in the PBA is something that we've dreamed about as kids. And now we're here, I'm truly grateful."

Before getting chosen by the FiberXers, the younger Gomez de Liano spent time playing in Japan, Lithuania and South Korea, where he played two seasons in the Korean Basketball League for the Seoul SK Knights.

It was also in the KBL where Juan was able to face off a few times with Javi, who had a one-year stint with Anyang Jung Kwan Jang.

Javi, two years older at 27, likewise went back to the Philippines after the KBL season when Magnolia acquired his rights from Terrafirma, his last PBA team in 2024.

"I was hoping that we would end up together," said Javi. "But he is in good hands with Converge so I'm happy for him." (JT)
