Meralco, San Miguel retro jersey on display in Wednesday's rematch

WHEN holder Meralco and old rival San Miguel Beer check in for action in Wednesday's PBA Philippine Cup gig, the squads won't be on their normal getups.

The Bolts and the Beermen will be in "retro attire" - wearing jerseys that the Meralco and San Miguel Beer ballclubs used pre-PBA, in the old MICAA hoop fests of the 1970s.

This adds nostalgia to the 7:30 p.m. rematch of the finalists of the Season 48 All-Filipino finals at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum that serves as highlight of the PBA's 50th anniversary day offering.

"I think it's nice for the league. We can trace our roots, di ba?" said Meralco coach Luigi Trillo.

"Malaking karangalan 'cause it's more than us. Meralco's also been there 'di ba, ever since even before (the founding of the PBA in 1975), in the other league (MICAA)," he added.

Bolts star Bong Quinto expressed excitement in seeing action in the PBA anniversary day game. Ditto in donning the orange jerseys legends like Robert Jaworski wore when they were with the Red Kilowatts in the 70s.

"Sobrang excited kasi siyempre noong bata pa lang ako, napapanood ko na talaga, gusto ko talagang maging PBA player. So ngayon na nandito ako tapos 'yung makapaglaro and makapag-celebrate ng 50 years, sobrang blessed," he said.

"Sobrang saya na 'yun nga, magkaroon kami ng opportunity na makapaglaro tapos 'yung jersey namin 'yung retro 'di ba? Hindi lahat nabibigyan ng pagkakataon na makapaglaro sa ganyang sitwasyon. So kami, sobrang blessed kami na isa kami sa team na makakapaglaro gamit yung mga retro na jersey." (OL)
