San Miguel on wait and see mode

NOW the waiting begins for the San Miguel Beermen.

With its elimination round assignment over and done with, the defending PBA Commissioner's Cup champion will now watch with keen interest the last two playing dates from the sidelines and see how things turn out for their campaign.

The Beermen had their backs against the wall after suffering a 115-97 deflating loss against TNT Tropang Giga Sunday night that pulled them out of the Top 8 with a 5-7 slate.

"We're going to see what happens," said veteran gunner Marcio Lassiter. "There's a chance, but it might be slim. But still there's a chance. We'll see how those results play."

Under the radar of the Beermen are the games of NLEX against Eastern on Wednesday and Magnolia opposite Meralco on Friday.

The Hotshots and Road Warriors are the two teams barely ahead of San Miguel at 5-6 and tied for the eighth spot.

A win by either of them will formally booted San Miguel out of the quarterfinals race, while losses by both teams give the reigning champion a ray of hope of forging a three-way logjam at 5-7.

For the record, the last time San Miguel failed to advance in the playoffs came in the 2015 Commissioner's Cup, according to PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III.

Lassiter said the there's definitely a lesson learned in this shaky and struggling campaign of the team.

"It's been an up and down conference. But you know, we can't dwell on it too long. We still have to figure out in the hunt for the last spot, and see how the games go along," he added.(RG)
