Tropang Giga and Fuel Masters try to push drive at each other's expense

ON-and-off TNT fights to keep its spot in the Top Eight while Phoenix Super LPG, from a smashing life-saving win the last time out, seeks to push its drive in a key match in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium Wednesday.

The Tropang Giga (4-4) still sit at sixth spot despite a loss to the Barangay Ginebra Kings, 87-83, Friday but a bevy of teams are right behind them, including the Fuel Masters at 3-5.

A tremendous effort coupled with a torrid shooting carried the Fuel Masters to a 112-77 rout of the NLEX Road Warriors Saturday and to a three-way logjam at ninth with the Blackwater Elite and the Meralco Bolts.

A win in the 7:30 p.m. Wednesday tiff would propel the Fuel Masters all the way up to joint seventh.

But both Phoenix and TNT are eyeing a strong windup in the last two weeks of the one-round-robin elims.

It's almost a playoff phase for all the teams slugging it out for the last six berths in the post-elims play.

San Miguel Beer has claimed a quarters ticket at 7-0 while Barangay Ginebra has placed a foot in the Last 8 at 6-3. The rest, except for the already eliminated Converge FiberXers, are in a spirited race.

"We worked the entire week as we really needed this win because we can't go down to 2-6," said Phoenix coach Jamike Jarin shortly after their 35-point romp over the Road Warriors.

"Big week for us. We now have to rest our bodies and get ready for the next game," Jarin also said.

Their homestretch run includes face-offs with Meralco on Friday and Blackwater on May 4.
