Beermen overpower Kings' reserves, apprentices

GEARING up for a comeback, Terrence Romeo had another display of torrid shooting in leading San Miguel Beer to a second straight win in the PBA on Tour Sunday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.

On a roll with an average of 20.5 points in his first two outings in the preseason series, presented by Arena Plus and sponsored by Bingo Plus, Romeo was still at it, firing 21 on a 45-percent clip as the Beermen trampled the "On Tour" debutants Barangay Ginebra Kings, 90-78.

Rodney Brondial came through with a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds while Jericho Cruz contributed 18 markers as the Beermen scored a follow-up on their 87-75 drubbing of the NorthPort Batang Pier after a losing series debut against the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters (101-106).

With a significant help in their 12-point repulsing of the Gin Kings was CJ Perez with 15 points in his first outing from his stint with Gilas Pilipinas in the recent Phnom Penh Southeast Asian Games.

With a big advantage in firepower and chemistry against the mostly reserves and apprentices for Ginebra, the Beermen pulled off a dominant win where they led by as many as 24.

Minus core players Christian Standhardinger, Japeth Aguilar, Scottie Thompson, Japeth Aguilar, Jamie Malonzo and Stanley Pringle, the Kings banked on Aljun Mariano, Raymond Aguilar and Jonathan Gray for leadership, offensive and defensive muscles.

But they just couldn't match the Beermen's strength and savvy.
Mariano had 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists to lead the Gin Kings who drew 14 markers and nine boards from Aguilar and nine points, five rebounds and five assists from Gray.

The Kings led by four early on before the Beermen ramped it up and surged to an 18-point lead, 45-27, at the half.

It was all an SMB show until the Kings tried to wage some amount of fight in the fourth period.(SB)
