Jeron Teng attracting attention with his improved play

JERON Teng is doing well coming off the bench for San Miguel Beer in the PBA Philippine Cup Finals.

Truth to tell, Teng has been a standout in the series regardless of his limited minutes on the floor. No wonder SMB coach Leo Austria has made him part of his regular rotation.

Through four games in the best of seven titular series, the 6-foot-2 guard is averaging 4.5 points and 1.0 rebounds in 6.5 minutes. But more than the numbers, Teng is the spark plug that keeps the Beermen going and sustain their rhythm.

"This is the Finals already, and every minute counts," Teng said. "So whenever I'm inside the court, I just make sure that I give my best and thankfully my teammates are there to support me."

The Beermen are up 3-1 in the series and one win away from reclaiming the all-Filipino championship.

Thanks to Teng's contribution.
?Teng's best game in the series was when he scored all his 10 points in the second quarter of Game 2 as SMB took a 51-39 lead at halftime. SMB eventually won, 98-92, to even the series at one game apiece.

The former La Salle star averaged 4.9 points and 1.4 rebounds in the eliminations in a span of eight minutes per game, more than enough time to gain Austria's trust and confidence.

Known for being a scorer during his UAAP days and while playing with Alaska and Converge, Teng said he's also working to improve on other facets of his game.
?"I'll do whatever it takes to improve my game. But my focus really is on defending," he said. "I want to make sure that I can help the team on the defensive side." (JT)
